About attested translation

Attested translation (also known as certified translation) is a special translation prepared of documents. Its speciality lies in the fact that attested translations are accepted in the procedures of Hungarian authorities in all cases, and are considered equivalent to Hungarian documents.

• Attested translation cannot be made of any source material: Owing to its above-mentioned special nature, attested translations may not be prepared of any piece of writing. The source must be a document. A document is a piece of writing that certifies a fact, statement or action in terms of its content, and contains all the formal elements prescribed by legal regulations in connection with the given type of document. For instance, signature and seal are such formal elements. In addition, documents must be true.

If any of the above conditions is missing, no attested translation may be prepared.

• Attested translations may not be prepared by anybody: The State authorized the Hungarian Office for Translation and Attestation to prepare attested translations – just as notarial deeds may only be prepared by notaries public.

• Attested translations may not be prepared in any manner: Strict rules apply to the preparation of attested translations. They define the procedures applicable for personal and geographical names, as well as for the translation of personal documents, certificates of birth, marriage and death, school certificates and court deeds. All of OFFI’s document translators must comply with these rules irrespective of the language of translation.

Attested translation is a guarantee

Attested translations provide security because

• the text translated in accordance with the rules is checked several times in the course of the process,
• special attention is paid to the protection of personal data,
• OFFI’s attested translations are accepted by all public and administrative authorities, as well as local governments in all procedures in the Republic of Hungary.
