Company history

Looking back upon a history of 140 years, the Hungarian Office for Translation and Attestation Ltd. (OFFI Ltd.) is a unique institution in Europe in the field of attested translations. It was founded in March 1869 under the name of Central Translation Department for the purpose of enabling ethnic minorities living in Hungary to exercise their rights in their mother tongue. This mission was fulfilled until the end of the First World War. OFFI Ltd. operated as a state-owned enterprise after the Second World War until 1994, and then it was transformed into a 100% state-owned company limited by shares with a registered capital of nearly fifty million forints.

As of 1 January 2011 the Ministry of Public Administration and Justice exercises shareholder’s rights in respect of the Hungarian Office for Translation and Attestation, as a business associations owned by the Hungarian State and falling within the assets of the Hungarian State Holding Company.

The Company secured the quality certificate of Bureau Veritas in 2002; it is valid for the following fields of application in accordance with the MSZ EN ISO 9001:2008 Standard:

  • Preparation of attested translation,
  • Attestation of translation,
  • Issue of attested copies,
  • Preparation of non-attested, commercial translation/revision; interpreting

NATO

The reliability and quality of work of OFFI is also proved by its entry in the register of qualified tenderers kept by the Public Procurement Council, and its title “NATO Supplier”

Headquartered in Budapest, OFFI has five regional offices and branch offices, where it receives orders from in and outside Hungary.

In order to secure its profitability in the long run, the Company has set the objective of adjusting the standard of its services to the requirements of customers.

OFFI has always been considered the stronghold of language mediation. Over the course of its history prominent figures of intellectual life worked here, fulfilling the mission of Hungarian linguistic culture. The list includes Árpád Göncz, Lajos Tardy, László Passuth, Sándor Karcsay and numerous other recognized authorities in linguistic matters.

OFFI Ltd. makes every effort to strengthen its reputation both in Hungary and internationally through maintaining excellent professional relationships with partner institutions and the involvement of renowned professionals.
